Local Attractions and Things to Do BEACHES Many people associate Prince Edward Island with beaches and this area offers several uncrowded examples. Beach Point beach guards the south side of the entrance to Murray Harbour and is a favorite with the locals, on the north side of the entrance is Poverty Beach which is great for beach combing and observing birdlife. Northumberland Park beach offers a long sand beach with a view of the Wood Islands ferry terminal, Panmure Island has a white sand beach backed by dunes and is supervised during the summer months. There are also several small local beaches tucked down side roads that are well worth exploring. GOLFING Prince Edward Island has a complete range of affordable golf courses including championship courses at The Links at Crowbush Cove, Brudenell River, Dundarave, and Avondale, all highly rated courses located within easy driving distance from Fox River Cottages. Beaver Valley Golf Club is also an eighteen hole course situated in a picturesque farmland setting. There are several nine hole courses nearby including the popular Belfast Highland Greens and Rollo Bay Greens. There are now thirty public courses on the Island and more being added every year.
CONFEDERATION TRAIL The local section of the Confederation Trail runs for approximately 35 kms from Murray Harbour through Murray River to Iona on the old railway bed. The surface has been graded and covered with fine packed gravel which is excellent for walking and biking. SEAL & BIRD WATCHING TOURS
The Rossignol Estate Winery is PEI's only winery, it features award winning fruit and grape wines made on site. The retail area has a tasting room and art gallery featuring local artists. The winery is located in Little Sands overlooking Northumberland Strait and is just a 10 minute drive from Fox River Cottages. CEILIDHS Ceilidhs are an offspring of traditional Island kitchen parties and are now being hosted by many communities and feature local singers, dancers, fiddlers and storytellers. These are held each week at the Murray Harbour Community Center, Orwell Corner Historic Village and St. Pauls RC Church in Sturgeon. Due to their popularity be sure to go early to ensure you get a seat. On Thursday nights at Pooles Corner near Montague Fiddlers Son host a concert series featuring talent form the"Island" and the other maritime provinces. ANTIQUE & CRAFT SHOPS Spend a delightful day browsing the craft and antique shops which abound in the area. Each has it's own personality selling everything from locally produced items to fine crafts from around the world. Some of the craft shops you will find in the area are; The Old General Store, Miss Elly's Genteel Gifts and Stuff, and Spit'n Image alpaca knitwear. Beach Point Antiques is also close by. KINGS CASTLE Kings Castle Provincial Park, three kms. form Fox River Cottages, is a delightful family orientated park featuring life size storybook characters, playground and kitchen shelters for barbecues and picnics. Admission is free.
Lighthouses are one of the last Canadian icons and there is much interest in maritime communities to have local lights preserved. Cape Bear Lighthouse is located at the southeastern tip of Prince Edward Island just minutes from Murray Harbour. This three story structure was built in 1881 and towers magnificently over Northumberland Strait. In 1905 a Marconi wireless station was built on the site to provide communications with coastal steamers, it was one of seven such stations in service on Prince Edward Island. This site was the first Canadian land based station to receive the S.O.S. distress call from the Titanic on the night of April 14th 1912. Historical artifacts and information are displayed in the lighthouse which is open for guided tours from June to September. Be sure to visit three other light houses in this area; Point Prim, Wood Islands and Panmure Island. Those with an interest in lighthouses can tour the Island and visit the many lights which guard the coastline.
MUSEUMS The Log Cabin Museum in Murray Harbour features a large collection of early household articles and farm machinery, over 3000 in all. The Garden of the Gulf Museum in Montague is housed in a historic Island sandstone building and is the oldest museum on PEI, among its displays is a fascinating medical display. FISHING There are several dams, streams and rivers in the area where you can try your hand at catching trout or you can try Ben's Lake in Bellevue where there is catch and release fly fishing and fee fishing. Here there is no license required and fishing tackle is available for rent.
